Treaty Politics Fuel Criticism at Sitka Salmon Meeting

An informational meeting on Alaska’s strategy for renegotiating the Pacific Salmon Treaty with Canada met loud protests before it even got started on Monday.
Local radio station KCAW reported on the protest held outside Sitka’s Harrigan Centennial Hall before the meeting started. There were some 50 commercial salmon trollers who objected to cuts in the king salmon allocation to conserve king salmon runs in Puget Sound which are listed as endangered.
