The Canadian DFO announced shrimp quotas for 2018. As the industry expected, there was another significant cut in Area 6, the primary location of Newfoundland’s inshore shrimp harvests.
The area 6 quota will be 8730 metric tons, down 16% from 2017. This is in line with industry expectations.
Further North, some quotas increased. Area 5 will have a TAC of 25,630 tons, and area 4 will get 15,725 tons, along with a bycatch quota for montagui of 4,033 tons, which is unchanged.
For area 6, 6,076 tons will go to the inshore fleet; 2,017 tons to offshore, and SABRI, the Innu Nation, and Fogo Island will all get small specified quotas from the remainder.
