NMFS Shuts Down Adak Cod Fishery Early as Dutch Harbor Boats Make Trips for Aleutian Cod

NMFS announced that the Bering Sea Catcher Vessel Trawl Cod fishery will shut down on Sunday, March 4th, ten days before the industry expected the closure, which was scheduled for March 14th.
The reason is that the 5000 ton trawl catcher vessel set aside quota for Adak will have been caught.
There are actually 2 quotas in the Bering Sea at issue. One is an unrestricted 5000 ton quota for pot and jig vessels, and the other is a 5000 ton cap on catcher vessels. Once the 5000 ton quota is reached for catcher vessels, all the trawlers in Adak will have to stand down.
This is not what the Council had intended.
Golden Harvest Alaska successfully set up a processing plant and brought 220 workers to Adak for the cod season. ..
