Seafood company Nippon Suisan Kaisha Ltd. has developed alternatives for Japanese flying squids and imported salmon as sushi and sashimi items amid their surging prices.
Record-breaking poor catches of the squids in waters around the Japanese archipelago since 2016 have pushed up their prices sharply. As of late this month, the squid's wholesale price at the Tsukiji fish market in Tokyo stood at more than twice the level seen three years before.
