SEAFOOD: A Decline in Shipments from Canada Leads Lobster Imports Lower in 2017

Imports of lobster products from Canada declined 8.1 percent in December and 4.5 percent in all of 2017. Live was down 7.6% for the month, but was up 1.5% for the year. In-Shell, which includes tails and whole cooked, was down 9.3% in December and 5.4% in 2017. Meat was down 15.4% for the month and 20.9% for the year.
Imports of cold water lobster tails are down 6.7 percent Jan-Dec.
Imports of warm water lobster tails fell 2.8 percent in the month of December, but the annual total was 15.2 percent higher. The rise in 2017 imports is largely attributable to the increase in shipments from the Bahamas and Brazil which were up 50.8 and 33.6 percent respectively.
