The shed at the end of Merritt Lane in Chincoteague doesn't look as if it is filled with millions of clams and oysters.
It's really just a small outbuilding barely distinguished except by the mountains of oyster shells in the lot beyond it. The building is the propagation house for Tom's Cove Aquafarms, and within it are a few massive tanks containing microscopic oysters that eventually will find their way into the estuaries that surround the island.
Tom Clark, who owns and founded the aquaculture farm, monitors the tanks daily. Sieves so fine they appear solid are used to sort the various sizes of oysters from one tank to the next. He feeds them an algae mixture imported specifically for the ...
