ADF&G Forecasts 51.3 Million Sockeye Salmon Run to Bristol Bay in 2025, 16% Below 10-Yr Average

Alaska’s Department of Fish and Game’s annual pre-season forecast of a total run of 51.31 million sockeye salmon and a harvest of 34.8 million sockeye is 16% smaller than the most recent 10-year average of 61.23 million fish but 38% greater than the long-term average of 37.07 million fish (1963– 2024).

Russian Crab Industry Struggles with Investment Pressures Amid Falling Demand and Export Limits

Quotas for Kamchatka crab in the Barents Sea will be sold at a reduced price at the end of November, as the planned auctions for the sale of quotas for catching crab in the Northern Basin, which was scheduled for November 13, will not take place due to the lack of applications.

According to the documentation on the Russian Auction House (RAD) website, the latest auctions failed because not a single application was received for participation.

Norway Sees Strong Exports in October Behind Mackerel, Improved Salmon Export Value to U.S.

The Norwegian Seafood Council examined Norway’s record-breaking October for seafood exports, which was primarily due to a historic month for mackerel exports.

“Never before has a higher value of seafood been exported in a single month. This is primarily due to exceptionally strong mackerel exports that we have never seen before. This alone accounted for almost all the growth in value in October," said Christian Chramer, CEO of the Norwegian Seafood Council.

Court Rules for Halibut Industry and Feds on Bycatch Abundance-Based Management

Last Friday, Judge Sharon Gleason in the U.S. District Court for the District of Alaska ruled in favor of the defendants, National Marine Fisheries Service, on Amendment 123 to the BSAI Groundfish Fishery Management Plan, rejecting challenges from the Groundfish Forum, representing bottom trawlers in the Bering Sea and the Aleutian Islands.

ADF&G Set Lowest Limits for Kodiak Tanner Crabs in Five Years, May Set Record for Shortest Season

On November 1, the Alaska Department of Fish and Game set Guideline Harvest Limits (GHLs) for Tanner crab fisheries in Kodiak, Chignik, and South Peninsula Districts that are at lowest levels in half a decade. Kodiak fishermen will have 560,000 lbs. to catch in the Kodiak District — 155,000 lbs. from the Eastern section and 405,000 lbs. from the Southeast section —  and 210,000 lbs. in the Eastern section of the South Peninsula District.

Record Price for Hokkaido Ikura Exceeds JPY10,000/kg, Demand Receding

With the increasing possibility that Hokkaido's fall chum salmon catch will end at a record low of around 40,000 tons, Hokkaido ikura salmon roe prices are soaring.

According to the Minato Shimbun report, the wholesale market price for this season's ikura is 11,000-13,000 yen/kg ($72.06-85.17/kg) for soya-seasoned ikura and 13,000-14,000 yen/kg ($85.17-91.72/kg) for salted ikura. Fisheries of the U.S. 2022 Report Reflects Slightly Lower Landings, Value, Consumption Than 2021

Between 2021 and 2020, U.S. per capita consumption of seafood products fell to 19.8 pounds from 20.5 pounds the year earlier.

Commercial landings in the United States also dropped slightly in 2022 were 8.4 billion pounds valued at $5.9 billion, down by 2.6 percent (224 Mlbs) by weight and 11 percent ($632 million) by value. The 2022 average ex-vessel price paid to fishermen was 70 cents per pound, 6 cents less than in 2021.

This week’s protein promotions spotlight seafood, which makes up 33.1 percent of all ads, with pork following at 25.6 percent and beef at 24.3 percent. Chicken features come in at 13 percent, while turkey ads saw a small increase to 3.8 percent, up from 3.3 percent last week but below the 5 percent seen two weeks prior.

Frozen turkeys make up 27 percent of all turkey ads, up 25.7 percent last week, with prices ranging between $2.79 and $5.00 discounted last week.

National Fisheries Institute Welcomes New Members to its Board of Directors

The National Fisheries Institute (NFI) approved a new slate of Directors of the Board at its Annual Membership meeting.

NFI explained that it elects a new slate of board members annually to serve three-year terms. The group’s bylaws allow for a 51-person Board, with 45 at-large Directors. There is an 18-person Executive Committee drawn from the Board and six officers as well.

Alaska Salmon Fishery Achieves Fifth MSC Certification; Marks 25 Years of Program Engagement

For the fifth time, the Alaska salmon fishery has achieved certification against the Marine Stewardship Council (MSC) Fisheries Standard. The milestone also means the fishery has reached 25 years of engagement with the MSC program.

The Alaska king and snow crab fisheries are underway, with all eyes looking north. This season, the red king crab quota has been raised by 7.5% to 2.310mm pounds. Meanwhile, tanner (or bairdi) snow crab has seen a remarkable increase, tripling last year's quota to 6.27 million pounds. Cooke to Acquire Peru’s Largest Fishing Company Copeinca

Seafood giant Cooke Inc. has entered into an agreement to purchase all outstanding shares of Corporació n Pesquera Inca S.A.C. (Copeinca), one of the largest producers and exporters of fishmeal and fish oil.

Cooke and PF Cayman New Holdco Limited executed a binding share purchase agreement. A wholly owned Cooke subsidiary will indirectly acquire all outstanding shares of Peru-based Copeinca.
