Multi X SA Reports Mass Mortality Event in Aysén Region Related to Low Oxygen

Multi X SA notified Sernapesca on March 15 of a mass mortality event at their facility in the Aysén region. According to the report, 30,000 Atlantic salmon were lost.

CEO Cristian Swett Pla confirmed to IntraFish that the mortality was related to “environmental challenges, mainly low oxygen.”

China's Seafood Imports Increased in 2022

China’s seafood import value has increased by 35.88% to US$19.872 billion in 2022 compared with the year before. Meanwhile, the volume has increased by 20.26% to 4.5402 million tons, according to customs statistics. The export value of top 10 exporters is said to constitute 74.26% of the total, and on top of the list is Ecuador whose export value has ballooned by 62.89% to US$3.562 billion last year.

Frozen Shrimp Tempura Product Recalled Due to Undeclared Allergen

The Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA) posted a recall of Frozen Pre-Fried Tempura Shrimp due to undeclared egg on March 23.

The product was produced by Day-Lee Foods, Inc. and was sold throughout British Columbia. According to the notice, the audience for the recall was hotels, restaurants and institutions.

The CFIA warned the audience not to “use, sell, serve or distribute the affected product.”

Hong Kong Customs Agents Seize Dried Fish Maws, Dried Shark Fins Worth An Estimated $300,000

Earlier this month customs agents at Hong Kong International Airport seized 270 kg of suspected scheduled dried fish maws and about 50 kg of suspected suspected scheduled dried shark fins. Both items have an estimated market value of about $300,000.

Despite continued protests in Newfoundland and Labrador, federal officials have yet to respond to members of the snow crab industry who are calling for quota increases

According to recent research, inflation remains the number one focus for restaurant operators and their paying customers.

New research by an Oregon State University-led team is beginning to unravel the times of year and locations where whales are at greatest danger of entanglement in fishing gear on the Oregon Coast.

Japan Fisheries Association Oppose Campaign by U of BC Professors Calling for High-Seas Fishing Ban

Japan Fisheries Association (JFA) held a press conference in Tokyo on March 20 and expressed opposition to the signature campaign by two professors from the University of British Columbia in Canada, who called for banning all high-seas fishing. Proximar Seafood Successfully Transfers First Batch of Salmon to Nursery

Proximar Seafood announced on Thursday that they have successfully transferred their first batch of Atlantic salmon from the feeding department to the nursery at their Japan facility.

Japan: Russian Crab Exports in 2023 Expected Frozen and Live 50-50

In 2022, the share of live crabs in Russia's crab exports increased by 10% from the previous year to 40%. The increase is because the United States, the country with the most significant demand for frozen crabs, has imposed an embargo on Russian products. Ecuador Sees Greater Exports to China 

Despite a market recession, Ecuador has enjoyed an increase in shrimp export volume this January. The number has gone up by 30% to 95,000 tons, according to statistics from Cámara Nacional de Acuacultura. One main reason for such a rise is said to be China, the country’s largest importer, whose imports has increased by 47% to 59,000 tons, while that of others like America only by 13% to 16,000 tons.
