ANALYSIS: Sharp Declines in October Shrimp Imports Erase Early Year Gains

In data released today, October U.S. shrimp imports fell sharply again for the fourth straight month, and erased the gains made earlier in the year. October imports were 153.009 million pounds, 18.6 percent below last year’s record of 187.990 million pounds Through the first ten months, imports have now slipped below last year for the first time all year. At 1.571 billion pounds, it is two percent lower than 2021 figures of 1.602 billion pounds.

Japan: Leading Crab Importer-Processor Imported 600 MT, Began Promoting the Russian Golden King Crab

Tsukiji Kanisho Co., Ltd., a Tokyo-based crab importer and processor, will focus on selling Russian Golden King Crab next year. Golden Kings are new products to the Japanese market, and the company will propose them to restaurants and mass retailers throughout the year. The sales floor has shrunk due to the soaring prices, but against the international situation, crabs are now at a price that is easy to handle, and the company plans to rebuild demand, reported Suisan Shimbun.

PNA Members Adopt Management Measures for Skipjack Tuna Stocks

Members of the Parties to the Nauru Agreement (PNA) have adopted measures for skipjack tuna in the Western and Central Pacific Ocean (WCPO).

The measures were described as a “significant component of the harvest strategy and tropical tuna measure that will be progressed in the coming years” by tuna company Pacifical.

The new deals, adopted at the latest Western Central Pacific Fisheries Commission (WCPFC), will apply to the catch of purse seine and pole and line fisheries and other commercial fisheries on skipjack in the Exclusive Economic Zones (EEZs)...

BioMar Names Former AKVA Executive as CEO of AQ1 Subsidiary

Andrew Campbell will become the CEO of aqua feed tech company and BioMar subsidiary AQ1, at the start of 2023.

Campbell previously spent time as an executive at AKVA, overseeing AKVA Group’s International operations in the Americas, Austrasia, Mediterranean and UK for the last 20 years.

Chicken of the Sea Frozen Foods (COSFF) can now say that they are the largest importer of Fair Trade Certified shrimp in the U.S. The news comes after the company launched an exclusive initiative with two of their global shrimp suppliers, Thai Union Frozen PCL and Avanti Frozen Foods.

NOAA Publishes Final Rule to Implement Two Framework Actions for Gulf of Mexico Red Snapper

On December 2 NOAA Fisheries announced a final rule implementing two framework actions under the Fishery Management Plan for the Reef Fish Resources of the Gulf of Mexico; Modifications to Data Calibrations and Annual Catch Limits for Gulf of Mexico Red Snapper.

Coast Guard Seizes Illegally Caught Halibut Near Homer, Alaska

The U.S. Coast Guard (USCG) announced that one of its law enforcement boarding teams seized illegally harvested fish near Homer, Alaska last week.

The incident was discovered by a Coast Guard Cutter Naushon boarding team when it found halibut aboard a commercial Individual Fishing Quota (IFQ) halibut vessel that was not documented in the vessel’s logbook.

According to the USCG, the halibut was filleted in a way that made the size and number of fish illegally harvested impossible to determine.

Japan: Sumitomo Corporation Enters the Blue Carbon Business in Iwate Prefecture

Sumitomo Corporation, based in Tokyo, has entered the blue carbon business, which absorbs and stores carbon dioxide (CO2) in the ocean. On November 21, it received "J Blue Credit®" certification for 3,106.5 tons of CO2 from the Japan Blue Economy Association (JBE) in Yokosuka, Kanagawa Prefecture. The project will develop and conserve seaweed beds in Hirono Town, Iwate Prefecture. FDA Refuses One Shipment of Antibiotic-Contaminated Shrimp in November

The Southern Shrimp Alliance (SSA) shared that the FDA released data on 82 total seafood entry line refusals last month, with only one involving shrimp related to the use of banned antibiotics.

The Alliance noted that through November, 55 entry lines of shrimp had been refused because of antibiotic-contaminated shrimp.

Between January and June, the FDA reported refusing 45 entry lines of shrimp due to veterinary drug residues. Since that stretch, only 10 entry lines have been refused...

Carrefour Belgium Named Best Supermarket for Fresh Fish by MSC

Retailer Carrefour and its Belgium operations were named the Best Supermarket for Fresh Fish by the Marine Stewardship Council and its Sustainable Fish Awards in Belgium.

The awards were aimed at publicly recognizing sustainability efforts by entrepreneurs and organizations in Belgium's fishing sector, Carrefour explained in a press release.

Poor Salmon Catch In Russia Leads to Decline of Red Caviar Output This Year  

Russia has faced a significant decline of red caviar production this year. As a result of the poor salmon fishing season, prices for red caviar have increased in the domestic market.

MSC Congratulates WCPFC for New Measures to Protect Key Tuna Stocks

The Marine Stewardship Council (MSC) was pleased with delegates of the Western Central Pacific Fisheries Commission (WCPFC), calling new measures to protect skipjack tuna a “significant breakthrough.”

The MSC explained that last week, government representatives from the 26 member states of the WCPFC met for the first time in person in Vietnam, after failing for years to agree on harvest strategies.
