Thailand's shrimp production will not likely return to its heyday any time soon as the fallout from the bacterial infection, which has ravaged output drastically since 2012, remains unresolved.
Somsak Paneetatyasai, president of the Thai Shrimp Association, says that so-called early mortality syndrome--disease caused by bacteria--has lowered the country's annual shrimp output by more than half, from an average of 500,000 tons to some 200,000 tons during the past three years--leading many operators to leave businesses due to heavy losses.
And while efforts to solve the problem progress, shrimp farmers are now reluctant to boost their productions out of fear of this may decrease prices. He said, "It is expected that Thai shrimp output will total around 210,000 tons this year. "
