North Pacific Seafoods Buys Two Alaskan Salmon Processing Facilities from Inlet Fish Producers
North Pacific Seafoods, Inc. has reached an agreement with Inlet Fish Producers, Inc. to buy their Kenai and Kasilof processing facilities. The deal will boost North Pacific’s seafood production volume to 62,000 metric tons, mostly with pink and sockeye salmon. North Pacific—which is owned by Japan’s Marubeni—will now have seven seafood processing facilities across Alaska. “We see this expansion as a good strategic fit for us and are delighted to have the Inlet team join our group,” said North Pacific’s COO John Garner.
Marine Harvest expanded a voluntarily fresh salmon recall last week to include Sam’s Club and Save Mart stores across California. The recall was originally published in mid-June over Listeria concerns in some of Marine Harvest’s fresh fish fillets distributed to BJ’s Restaurants and Ralphs stores in California.
In other news Russian President Vladimir Putin has signed into law legislation banning drift-net fishing in Russia's exclusive economic zones starting January, 2016. The decision deals a major blow to Japanese salmon and trout fishermen who have practiced drift-net fishing the region for decades. Russian authorities said the ban was not intended to target the Japanese industry but, to clean up fishing practices in the region.
Finally, US restaurants sales were up for the 15th straight month in May. “The outlook for the restaurant industry remains positive,” Hudson Riehle, senior vice president of the research and knowledge group at the NRA, said in a statement. “A majority of restaurant operators reported higher same-store sales in May, and operators are generally optimistic about an improving business environment in the months ahead.”
