Bristol Bay Sockeye Season Shifts into High Gear

In the last two days more than half a million sockeye were harvested in Bristol Bay, indicating the fishery is ramping up to what ADF&G says may be the third largest run in recent history.
Bristol Bay is home to the world’s largest salmon run. The fleet numbers more than 1,000 vessels. Five major harvest areas are fed by nine river systems into the bay, all supporting annual sockeye, or red returns. The Nushagak River also has a commercial king salmon run.
On Friday, total catch of the five major areas in Bristol Bay was just over 800,000 sockeye. The escapement total in all rivers was 716,000 sockeye. Then on Saturday, another...
