New England Harvesters Awarded $300,000 to Implement Electronic Monitoring

The National Fish and Wildlife Foundation is awarding the Nature Conservancy $300,000 to implement electronic monitoring systems in the New England’s fishing industry.
Senators Angus King and Susan Collins announced the funding on Wednesday. They say the project will be a collaborative effort with the local fishing industry that will equip up to two dozen fishing boats with electronic monitoring. The vessels are part of New England’s groundfishing industry, which fishes for species such as cod, haddock and pollock.
The senators say in a joint statement that using electronic monitoring will help to efficiently and equitably manage these resources and protect the long-term health and sustainability of our fisheries. Many groundfishermen have said the cost of paying for people who work as at-sea monitors could put them out of business...
