Customs Strike Threatens Chilean Fresh Salmon Exports to Overseas Markets

Chilean Customs officials walked off the job indefinitely this week in a strike that now threatens the country's fresh salmon exports to overseas markets.
The strike was initiated on Wednesday by the National Association of Chilean Customs Workers (ANFACH) in a dispute over pay and working conditions. There is no timetable for how long the workers plan to stick it out on the picket line. ANFACH wants the government to modernize the country’s National Customs Service and increase the number of ground staff and budget. However the workers says these discussions have been ongoing for six years and they want to see progress.
“We have been in discussion with the government for six years and during that time all we have seen are delays. We do not have sufficient resources to do the work we are expected to carry out at land, sea and air borders and a number of workers have already suffered serious accidents," said ANFACH president Marcelo Reyes.
