Tasmanian Government Backs Super Trawler as Fishing Sustainably

The Tasmanian government has rejected a parliamentary bid to take a message of disapproval to Canberra over a large factory fishing trawler.
THE 95-metre Geelong Star trawler informed the Australian Fisheries Management Authority on Tuesday that in the first few weeks of operation it had caught four dolphins and two fur seals, which are both protected species.
The Tasmanian Greens moved a motion in state parliament on Wednesday calling for support from the Liberal administration and Labor to send a formal objection to the federal government.
But the Tasmanian government overturned the motion and instead carried one of its own, reconfirming its support for sustainable fishing that is "backed by sound science".
