Although they are not armed with modern farming techniques, shrimp farmers in the northern tip of Ernakulam district have been reaping rich dividends this season.
The Matsya Samrudhi project introduced by the State Fisheries Department has turned out to be a huge hit among the shrimp farmers here, despite the looming threat of white spot syndrome (WSS) that is considered to be a lethal virus infection capable of killing a large number of shrimps in a very short span on time. WSS has been a regular threat in many parts of the State over the years.
“Though virus infections like WSS were reported in shrimp farms across the State at the end of the winter season, there were no reports of large-scale death of shrimps and other fish varieties in aquatic farms in the rural areas of Ernakulam,” said Fisheries Department deputy director K M Eliaz...
