Pacific Council Closes 2015-16 Pacific Sardine Fishery

The Pacific Fishery Management Council announced the closure of the 2015-16 Pacific sardine directed fishery due to forecasts of a biomass “significantly below” the 150,000 metric ton threshold for a directed fishery. That fishery would have opened July 1 this year.
On Wednesday the Council will determine the fate of the current fishery, which was a few thousand tons short of its annual harvest limit a week ago and has until June 30 before the season is closed.
Although the 2015 directed commercial fishery will close, the Council will allow up to 7,000 tons of sardines to account for small amounts taken as incidental catch ...
