More than any other Chesapeake Bay creature, the lowly oyster is a vital water-quality role player and storyteller in the Bay's past, present and future. That's why so much money and effort is being invested in its recovery and why the budding success of its comeback is so noteworthy.
Last week, numbers worth celebrating were reported in the 2014 Virginia Shellfish Aquaculture Crop Reporting Survey, which is produced by the Virginia Institute of Marine Science. Perhaps not surprising, according to the report, is that Virginia continues to be the nation's leader in farmed hard clam production and sales, seeing a 14 percent revenue increase last year for clam growers...
