Fresh and Easy Plans to Shed Some Stores, Redeploy Capital

Amid reports Fresh & Easy plans to close as many as 50 stores of its 200 stores, the company said Sunday it plans to rationalize its store base and divest locations “that do not meet the criteria of Fresh & Easy’s model of modern convenience.”
It did not cite any specific numbers in a formal statement.
Fresh & Easy said it plans to redeploy capital from operating fewer stores to provide a higher level of convenience and greater density.
In addition, the company said it is working with ADMI, the company behind the design of the Apple Store, to design “the Fresh & Easy store of the future —a concept the company believes represents the future of convenience retail and puts Fresh & Easy into a category of one: the only fresh-food convenience store.”
