Safeway Canada Refusing to Sell NZ Toothfish Citing Ross Sea MPA Issue

New Zealand pioneered the longline fishing of Ross Sea or Antarctic toothfish and exports about $18 million worth a year, mainly to the United States.
A regional environmental treaty sets an annual quota of 3000 tonnes, with New Zealand-based boats taking most of it.
But Safeway Canada, which operates 213 supermarkets in western Canada and is linked to the North American-wide Safeway chain, is now refusing to sell it. In a statement on its website it points to the failure to have marine protected areas (MPAs) declared over the Ross Sea.
