Nova Scotia Lobsters May be Contracting Deadly Parasite From Green Crabs Used as Bait

A husband-and-wife team researching early deaths in Nova Scotia lobsters has found a correlation between those deaths and the use of invasive green crab as bait.
Sarah Stewart-Clark, a scientist with Dalhousie University’s faculty of agriculture, said some fishermen are already using green crab in lobster traps and more are interested in the bait, because they are a nuisance, they are available and they are inexpensive.
However, she said, results of a study published last week show a parasite is being transferred from green crab bait to lobsters, and more results on another parasite, a bacterium and a virus are expected in the next few months...
