VANCOUVER — The B.C. geoduck industry, one of the province’s most lucrative fisheries at almost $50 million a year, is usually gearing up for its busiest time of year right now.
Instead, it is running at half-speed.
Just before Christmas, Hong Kong, which accounts for more than 50 per cent of exports, imposed a sudden ban on geoduck shipments from Canada, citing unacceptable levels of paralytic shellfish poisoning (PSP), a toxin that can cause severe illness or death.
