Qingdao Imported 470,000 tons of Seafood with a Growing Amount Going to Domestic Market

China is quickly changing international trading patterns in seafood by using more imported product. This story from Qingdao highlights some of these changes, with 15% of pollock and salmon now sold domestically. Consumers have also stepped in and picked up the slack on products like king crab and lobster, after restaurants backed away due to the corruption campaign. The result is now a consumer driven demand for imported seafood that has broken far out of the old model - when most expensive imports went only to high end restaurants and hotels. 470 thousand tons of seafood are imported to Qingdao within one year and 60% of the seafood come from Russia.
The imported seafood have changed from the originally elite member in the market to the common one during the past few years. According to the data from Qingdao Entry-exit Inspection and Quarantine Bureau yesterday, Qingdao has imported 471.4 thousand tons of seafood in 2014 and the market consists the domestic seafood along with the imported ones in the proportion close to 2:1 for the first time.
The local consumption of these imported seafood has increased greatly and nearly 15% of the imported seafood, about 70 thousand tons, have been bought by the local consumers. The reporter has found that these seafood mainly come from such areas as Russia, Japan and the EU. And they have gone through the thorough examination of the inspection and quarantine bureau as well as the sampling of oceanic and fishery administration upon their arrival at China....
