Blocking IUU Toothfish from Markets More Effective Than At-Sea Interdiction (Opinion)

In theory, commercial fishing for the southern ocean seafood delicacy toothfish is tightly controlled. Legal operators have formed a body called the Coalition of Legal Toothfish Operators who represent more than 84 per cent of the legal toothfish catch.
The episode this week in the southern seas show how difficult it is to halt IUU fishing.
Identifying those in charge, and finding out and blocking off the markets into which the catch might be sold, will be far more effective in halting the illegal operations.
