News Summary: Shrimp Cuts may haunt Newfoundland communities next year

The continuing projected decline in shrimp stocks is threatening the viability of many inshore shrimp harvesters and processors for next year. We run an interview about the future of the inshore shrimp industry.
Paid signature collectors in Alaska are working to get a ballot measure that would ban setnets in Cook Inlet. The initiative was initially denied by Alaska's Secretary of State, as an unconstitutional resource grab, but he was overturned by the courts. The ballot would destroy thousands of jobs to provide approximately 157 more king salmon for sport fishers and guides in Upper Cook inlet.
The GAO, for the seventh year, has called on Congress to end the plan to give catfish inspection to the USDA, as a wasteful misallocation of government resources. But the rules are currently under review at the White House and are past their legal time limit. As a result, despite widespread opposition, there may be some movement on Catfish Inspection during the first half of 2015.
After accepting FDA arguments and data that eating fish is healthy for pregnant women, some EPA advisors are pushing to expand the list the FDA thinks pregnant women should avoid, to include Orange Roughy and Marlin.
In our weekly Urner Barry protein round up, beef and pork prices have fallen, while several seafood items have ticked up. Shrimp promotions continue to run well ahead of last year.
Volker Kuntzch has been CEO of Sanford for a year, and in a video interview, reflected on his first year. ''You need luck in the commodity business," he said, because you cannot control your prices. He would like to see Sanford become more consumer focused, and move beyond its current strengths as a seafood harvesting company.
