Russian crab captains call for quota increase; analyst says 30% of Russian crab was IUU in 2013

Moscow - Russian leading crab producers have called on the country’s President Vladimir Putin to increase the existing crab quotas in the country, due to the ever growing volume of illegal catch and declining profitability of the industry.
In an official letter to Putin, producers call on Putin to lift the existing restrictions on the crab catch in the West Kamchatka shelf.
Commercial fishing of red king crab in the West Kamchatka and the Kuril-Kamchatka subzones was permitted in November 2013 after lifting of the existed ban. According to the results of studies, conducted in summer of 2014, scientists had proposed to increase the total allowable catch (TAC) of king crab in these subzones for the current year to 2790 tonnes and 1988 tonnes respectively (in 2013 the TAC was 5,700 tonnes).
