Russia-Japan IUU fishing agreement takes effect with focus on crab

MOSCOW, A Russian-Japanese accord to fight illegal, undeclared and unregulated fishing has entered into force on Wednesday.
Now Japanese ports will accept Russian catches only if a special certificate is produced. Russia’s fisheries agency is authorised to issue a document verifying lawful origin of sea products. So, the two countries provided for no importation and sale of illegally caught sea bioresources, the agency said.
According to 2012 data, 20 percent of the crab catch in Russia’s Far East was caught illegally.
