Appeals Court says five Boston seafood companies must pay taxes for overstaying Fish Pier leases

The state Court of Appeals has upheld a 2011 Suffolk Superior Court ruling requiring five companies that have operated on the Boston Fish Pier to pay taxes to the city of Boston for the five-year period after their leases expired.
The tenants are Cape Cod Shellfish & Seafood Co. Inc., John Mantia & Sons Inc., Atlantic Coast Seafood Inc. New England Marketers Inc. and Great Eastern Seafood Inc., which have operated wholesale seafood businesses on the Boston Fish Pier. Cape Cod Shellfish & Seafood and Great Eastern Seafood are no longer located on the pier.
The plaintiffs overstayed their leases, which ended in 2004, continuing to pay rent and occupy space on the pier, according to the appellate court ruling. The city sought further tax payments from the companies for that overage period, spanning from Jan. 1, 2005, through March 31, 2010, according to the appellate court ruling...
