FDA clarifies policy on ensuring safety of seafood imports from China

A story in Inside U.S. Trade which we ran yesterday said FDA may move to terminate existing import alerts affecting imports of Chinese farm-raised seafood. This could be misinterpreted and FDA has issued a statement clarifying its policy.
An FDA spokesman has subsequently clarified that, "if the agency were to determine that it could rely on inspections by Chinese authorities, it would be more likely that specific companies in China could be removed from the alerts if they demonstrated a clean track record."
"The alerts themselves, however, would likely stay in place while companies violations were still on the list."
