High prices for cod in Russia hurting domestic consumption, pushing more fish to export market

Russia may face a shortage of white fish during the next several years say Murmansk producers. They say the coastal fisheries cannot compete with the high prices of the export market, and that therefore supplies within Russia may be limited.
This shortage of white fish during the next several years is partly due to the recent devaluation of the national currency, the ruble, caused by the economic crisis in the country and the imposition of sanctions.
Local fisherman prefer to sell its abroad instead of supplying the domestic market, according to an official representative of the Russian Ministry of Agriculture.
A threat of cod shortage in Russia has already been seen in the increase of prices for cod in the Murmansk region, (which is a center of production of cod and other white fish) from 90 to 140 rubles per 1 kg. ($US 2.95)
According to Sergey Gudkov, the executive director of the Russian Fishery Union, the current prices for cod are the highest over the past 10 years...
