California crabbers will fish for second year under tiered Dungeness trap limit system

SANTA CRUZ, California crabbers are patching their crab pots and getting ready to head out to sea for the start of another Dungeness crab season.
The commercial season, which starts Saturday, will be the second subject to a new system that limits the total number of traps that crab fishers may use.
The new rules have capped the total number of traps in California's crab-fishing fleet to about 175,000, and assigns individual crabbers into one of seven tiers based on their record of historical catches. Crabbers in the lowest tier are only permitted to use 175 traps, and highest-tier crabbers are limited to 500...
