Northern Lights Seafood in Main Brook producing Newfoundland's first half shell scallops

Newfoundland and Labrador now does half-shell scallops. The first samples of the wild-harvested product rolled off the conveyor on Thursday at Northern Lights Seafood in Main Brook.
Plant employees, receiving on-the-job training, were busy preparing 1,600 pounds of scallops as a test product for potential buyers.
Unlike regular scallop processing, which is the white meat only and prepared by the harvester, the plant oversees the processing, which involves halving the shells, leaving all contents within (except the pancreas), cleaning and placing them into 12-pound boxes. The uncooked scallops are then air-blast frozen.
Project consultant Danny Dumaresque said the biomass of the species is quite healthy. “Right now there is a 1,000-tonne quota that has not been harvested in 20 years,” he said.
