Emergency Pacific Council meeting on whiting held Friday

The Pacific Fishery Management Council considered in-season management actions for the Pacific whiting fishery in an emergency meeting on Friday.
The full council met by conference call last Friday at 2 p.m. (Pacific) to address whether the fishery should be re-opened and, if so, under which suite of more restrictive management measures.
A “lightning strike” of darkblotched rockfish triggered the voluntary closure of the mothership sector of the Pacific whiting fleet last week. Days later the threshold for another bycatch species, chinook salmon, was crossed by the entire fleet (inshore, catcher processors, and motherships) triggering a shut-down and a mandated “biological consultation” to determine next steps...
