Live crab imports surge at Wakkanai as traders rush to beat new IUU regulations

August live crab imports at Wakkanai hit the highest monthly level this year propped up by buying rush prior to the enforcement of Japan-Russia anti-poaching pact.
Imports of live crab from Russia at the northernmost Hokkaido port of Wakkanai in August this year totaled 468 tons, rising to the highest level this year, according to the local customs office.
The office explained that the surge in shipments was due to traders' anticipation for rigorous regulations in the days ahead as the treaty between Tokyo and Moscow on the prevention of poaching and smuggling of crab will take effect in the coming December.
