South Africa's hake industry calls for government cooperation to assure continued MSC certification

Retaining accreditation from the Marine Stewardship Council (MSC) is crucial for the hake industry as thousands of jobs could be at risk and it could have an impact on the country's economy, if lost, says the South African Deep-Sea Trawling Industry Association.
The South African trawl fishery has been acknowledged as one of the most sophisticated, well-managed and scientifically robust fisheries in the world, according to the association.
However, this status is heavily reliant on continued co-operation between the public and private sectors to retain MSC certification due for renewal next year.
This emerged during a visit by the stakeholder council of the MSC which is meeting in Cape Town this week.
