Large Kyokuyo full cycle farmed bluefin tuna project underway
SEAFOODNEWS.COM [Nikkei Report] - September 26, 2014 -
TOKYO, Fisheries giant Kyokuyo and Nippon Formula Feed aim to begin shipments in 2017 of farmed bluefin tuna hatched in captivity, helping to provide stores and eateries with a stable supply amid tighter restrictions on tuna catches.
Together, they aim to ship about 200 tons a year -- the most ambitious project yet by any Japanese fish-farming company. They successfully transferred 14,000 young second-generation tuna from an above-ground fish pen to an enclosure in the Uwa Sea, near Ehime Prefecture, between August and September.
Rival fishery companies Maruha Nichiro and Nippon Suisan Kaisha also aim to commercialize full-cycle tuna farming. Maruha Nichiro is raising 6,000 fish and plans to begin shipments in 2016. Nippon Suisan has developed feed for days-old fry, aiming to slash initial breeding costs by half.
