Dartmouth, MA, UMass Dartmouth professor Pingguo He has been awarded a NOAA Fisheries grant to help develop low-impact trawling technology that will help fishermen avoid overfished yellowtail flounder bycatch while trawling on Georges Bank.
It could help fishermen reduce regulatory bycatch while catching more abundant species like haddock and Atlantic pollock.
It uses "trawl doors" and floating synthetic ground cables to reduce seabed contact.
