Japan's Fisheries Agency unveils warning system to curb overfishing of bluefin tuna
SEAFOODNEWS.COM [Jiji Press] - August 25, 2014 -
Tokyo, Japan's Fisheries Agency plans to introduce a warning system in 2015 to prevent the overfishing of bluefin tuna in waters around the country, officials said Monday.
Under the system, warnings or alerts will be issued to relevant fishery organizations through e-mail or phone calls as soon as the agency notices that bluefin tuna catches have risen close to preset ceilings, the officials said.
The agency also plans to post such warnings and alerts on its Web site in order to raise awareness among consumers about the importance of appropriate management of tuna.
The new warning system covers fishing of immature tuna weighing less than 30 kilograms around Japan by fixed nets, towing nets and other methods.
