California sportsfishermen flummoxed as Mexico fails to confirm lifting bluefin tuna ban

Last weekend, the word came that the Mexico officials were rescinding the closure on bluefin tunafishing in its waters, and that the official “letter” would be in U.S. officials’ hands by Monday. Many skippers of the sportboats out of San Diego took the news to mean they could immediately start keeping bluefin tuna, and that’s what officials here thought was the case, too.
Well Monday came and went and no paperwork. Then Tuesday. And Wednesday. Thursday, Friday, and now Saturday. No word
We are having one of the most spectacular tuna seasons in memory for many anglers and skippers — even in United States waters. Both yellowfin and bluefin tuna are showing in greater numbers, over a broad swath of ocean, and for a longer period of time than I can remember — and we are really just at the beginning of what would normally be the start of the tuna season now...
