EU punishes UK over-quota fishing by cutting mackerel quota again

Scotland’s mackerel fishermen have been hit with another blow after EU bosses cut their quota for next year as punishment for over-fishing. Skippers at ports including Lerwick, Fraserburgh and Peterhead could suffer after fisheries commissioner Maria Damanaki imposed sanctions on the UK.
The UK will lose 6,500 tonnes of its mackerel quota. It will also lose 200 tonnes of saithe.
The news comes just days after industry chiefs have warned that Russian sanctions on European food imports could have “extremely serious” implications for the Scottish mackerel fleet and processors.
It is estimated exports of frozen pelagic fish to Russia – which includes mackerel and herring – are worth £17million a year.
