Facing bare shelves, Russian gov't takes steps to ease red tape for domestic fish sales

Moscow- The Russian government is taking steps to solve the problem of fish shortages in the domestic market.
The ban on imports has resulted in a growing threat of shortages of fish and seafood in Russia. As a result, the country’s Ministry of Agriculture has designed a series of measures, aimed at stimulating local fishermen to sell to the domestic market.
The first measure is to suspend mandatory veterinary testing of each batch of fish. Instead the existing complex system of veterinary control and mandatory laboratory testing of each batch of fish will be replaced by a more liberal veterinary control, based on the system of risk assessment, ultimately more similar to the HACCP system used in the U.S.
In addition, there are plans to set deadlines for the paperwork required for landing fish. Currently it can take days for all the required laboratory and tax forms to sell a load of domestic fish, while fish for export has to have paperwork completed within 3 hours...
