Scientists and fishermen should be working together to build a future that is both ecologically and economically sustainable for the seafood industry, Peter Talley says.
The Talley's Group boss addressed the final day of the New Zealand Marine Sciences Society conference in Nelson yesterday and called for a cluster of science agencies and seafood businesses to share information to protect fish stocks and drive the industry forward.
Too often, management decisions were based solely on science advice and did not take into account the variable nature of the fisheries.
The first people to see changes in stock abundance or fish behaviour patterns were "the blokes on the boats" but all too often their observations were dismissed, Talley said...
