Nova Scotia's H&H Fisheries hit with $400,000 fine for illegal halibut deals

An Eastern Passage fishing business has been fined nearly $400,000 for dealing in illegal halibut.
H&H Fisheries Ltd. was handed the fine Wednesday by Judge Ted Tax in Dartmouth provincial court after pleading guilty to three counts of purchasing and possessing illegal halibut on several occasions between 2007 and 2009.
He ordered the company to pay a total of $175,000 on the three counts filed against the company under the federal Fisheries Act and a further $218,133.17 under a separate section of the act that deals with the monetary benefit gained through the activity.
The company sold the illegal groundfish, purchased from four separate area fishermen a total of 67 times in the two-year period, for about $899,000, court heard...(more)
