GMRI's Steve Eayres spells out benefits fuel saving measures could have for NE groundfish fleet

The announcement of disaster relief funds for the struggling groundfish fishery has generated a lot of talk about options and how best to provide maximum relief for fishermen. While not discounting the need or importance of these options, it appears that the purchase of fuel saving instrumentation and fishing gear is an option that has not yet been seriously considered.
Unlike some options being discussed, this option provides both instantaneous and ongoing relief, and it benefits not only boat owners and captains, but also crew as well.
By installing a fuel flow meter a captain can reduce his annual fuel expenses by around 5 percent, primarily as he adjusts boat speed to optimize fuel consumption...(more)
