Washington fishermen look to albacore fishery for dollars as salmon prices plummet

As prices for salmon performed their annual plummet at the beginning of July, many Washington-based commercial fishermen readied their boats for what they hope will be a good tuna season.
On July 9, Ilwaco-based fisher Justin Rogers was between trips, having just returned with a load of albacore tuna. He spent the down-time making small repairs to his boat, but planned to head out again as soon as possible. On nearby boats and in the dry dock area at the Port of Ilwaco, other fishers were changing over their gear too and making last-minute repairs.
Mark Kujala, owner of Skipanon Brand Seafood in Warrenton, said a haul of coho salmon recently was bought for about $1.50 a pound, too low to be very profitable for fishing operations...(more)
