Top Story: EMS has spread north in China to the shrimp farming area around Ningbo, south of Shanghai
Shrimp farmers in Ningbo China, who benefitted last year from EMS caused reductions in shrimp production in South China, now are facing the disease themselves. Post-Larvae stocked in March have been dying off, in a classic symptom of EMS. Aquaculture experts are recommending careful purchase of PL’s, DNA testing of PL’s, and all around improvements in pond management. Locals have also found polyculture may help. If the disease can't be controlled, it may contribute to more demand for external shrimp in China.
In the Gulf, shrimpers are waiting day by day for the brown shrimp season to open. Cold weather has delayed growth of the shrimp, and some think even the mandated May 19th date will be too early, flooding the market with small shrimp. ““We really do believe that we will have a good strong brown shrimp season,” said David Chauvin who owns boats in Dulac and Chauvin. A small white shrimp area has opened as well.
