John Furlong, former host of The Fisheries Broadcast in Newfoundland, dead at 63

John Furlong, who was the long time host of the Fisheries Broadcast in Newfoundland, and an avid reporter and follower of fishing industry news and politics on the Rock, has died of cancer. His passing was announced last Wednesday. He left the broadcast about a year ago, but while he was host, we did many interviews, with his question almost always being some variant of 'John, tell me about the market'.
He had a firm belief that the more fishermen knew of the broader seafood market, the better they could understand their own situation, and he recognized where fishermen and processors had common interests, and where they did not. That's why the 5:30 pm afternoon 'broadcast' was listened to by most people in the seafood industry in the province.
