Confusion reigns over snow crab prices, as both sides deny any firm price agreements reached

No firm price agreements have been reached with Japanese buyers for Newfoundland snow crab. That much both Newfoundland packers and major Japanese buyers can agree on.
There have been some sales made to the Japanese at a 'provisional price' of $4.80. The Newfoundland packers say that price is not fixed, and it could rise in subsequent negotiations. The Japanese say this is not a 'minimum price' and that it could go either up or down in future negotiations.
