Bain Capital buys Manischewitz as kosher food goes mainstream

The organic market continues to be the fastest growing segment of the food industry as the eating habits of Americans slowly trend toward healthier choices. While the organic movement is a well-told-tale, another element of the industry has been quietly but steadily broadening its appeal: the kosher market.
Kosher foods have averaged more than 10 percent sales growth in the U.S. over the past five years and, among the 12.2 million customers who bought kosher products nationwide last year, more than half did so for “health and safety” reasons, not religious ones, according to a survey by Lubicom Marketing and Consulting, which specializes in the kosher industry.
