Russian Sakhalin pink salmon hatcheries to release 12% more eggs than Alaska’s Prince William Sound

One of the biggest frustrations that many involved with Alaska fisheries has had with the MSC has been the double standards applied to Alaskan and Russian fisheries.
One prime example is in salmon. Most Russian salmon fisheries are engaged in high profile fisheries improvement projects, and two major fisheries in Sakhalin have either received MSC certification or are in the final stages of assessment.
Meanwhile, both the SFP and the MSC have highlighted their problems with Alaska’s pink salmon hatchery program in Prince William Sound. Their concerns were sufficiently great that first, Prince William Sound was dropped from the MSC assessment of Alaska salmon in 2013, and SFP advised its partners to avoid PWS fish if they rely on MSC certification.
